SUB: THE NEED BEFORE US. TEXT: NEH 2: 18-20. Intro: The situation that existed at Jerusalem at that was not a very pleasant one for the Jewish people. Many of the Jews had returned to Jerusalem and having been taught by Ezra, they were aware of the responsibility they had of worshiping the True God, Jehovah. While Ezra had accomplished the spiritual establishment of the new community, Nehemiah succeeded by giving it physical stability. As the king's cupbearer, he had learned that the community in Judah was in great affliction (1:3) He then succeeded in having himself appointed as governor in Judea with the authority and resources to rebuild the city walls. Because of the man that he was, and God's grace upon him, he was able to accomplish the work in 52 days. He met many challenges but was always able to withstand them. In every case, he met them with courage and wisdom and an invincible determination to complete the task for which God had called him. In spite of everything that came at him, He succeeded. Why? 1.THE MAN: There were certain characteristics about Nehemiah that the Bible reveals to us, which to a great extent shows us why he succeeded in His particular calling of rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem. A. He was a man of prayer. Neh 1:4. 2:4. 4:4.,9. 6:9,14. i) He spent four months in prayer before he made his request unto the king. Neh 1:1. and 2:1Chisleu to Nisan was four months. ( Corresponds with Nov-Dec to March-April) ii) Think of the impression that should have upon us. "Persistence is the key to success". e.g. the woman with the possessed daughter. Matt 15:21-28. B. He was a patriotic man, concerned about the welfare of fellow citizens. Neh 1:2-4. This was his burden and his vision. i) He enquired about his people. Neh 1:2. ii) In his distress for them he prayed and then acted upon his faith and convictions. Neh 1:4 2:8. a. He went to the King. Neh 2:1. b. Made his request known. Vs 5-8. c. The King granted him authority.8b. C. He was a persevering man. His calling was from God and being fully convinced of this, He was determined to succeed. But notice... i) He met with opposition. There were powerful enemies. Neh 4:1-3. a. According to a document written in 407 BC. Sanballat was a governor of Samaria. b. Some believe that Tobiah, as a servant in the Persian Empire, may have held high office. ii) he met the opposition in two ways. a. He sought God's help. Neh 4:4,5.(Spiritual preparation) b. He armed himself and his people. Neh 4:13-23.(Physical preparation) 11. THE MISSION. Because of the huge burden or vision God had place upon Nehemiah, he went to the King, was successful in his requests and now ventured out in faith to accomplish the will of God for his life. This will was...The rebuilding of the walls. A. The walls were for the security and physical protection of the people of God. They had God for protection but they had a responsibility to also act wisely. This was Nehemiah's faith being put into action. James 2:20. B.The walls revealed the boundaries of safety. You step out from it, you become exposed to danger. They are not only to protect us from those outside but also to protect us from our selves. 111. HIS METHOD: As in every area of life, we must develop methods in whatever we do or attempt to do so that we will have a measure of success. Observe Nehemiah's method. A. He developed a caring heart for his people. Neh 1: 2. B. He sought God's approval as seen in His prayer. Neh 1:4-11. C. He went to the King. Neh 2:1-8 D. He received the necessary authority. Neh 2:8b E. He made an assessment of the task ahead and it's requirements. Neh2:12-15. F. He pointed out the need. Neh 2:17. G. He shared his vision. Neh 2:18a. H. The people's response. Neh2:18b. I. They were assured of success because of their confidence in their God. Neh 2:20. Concl: We need the vision to build strong homes, and strong churchesfor the glory of God. |
