TEXT: 1 John 5: 1-5.
SUB: A believer?

Intro. 1) Present day hypocrisy in Christianity.
2) Revealed through paganistic practices... (holding hands in circles to pray, rosaries etc)
3) Indecent behavior in churches. (Speaking in tongues? Slain in the spirit? Fake signs and wonders etc)
4) Paul chided the Corinthians for these inappropriate behavior.
5) Are you a real believer? How does it begin?

1. THE PECULIARITY OF THE NEW BIRTH. Vs 1a

A. It is from above. John 1: 13.James 1: 18.
B. It excludes boasting. Eph 2: 8,9.
C. Only God gets the glory from a real salvation…
D. Today’s terminology places glory for salvation on the individual rather than God.
e.g. I opened my heart. I walked the aisle. I did this or that…

11. THE REVELATION OF THE NEW BIRTH. vs 1b

A. It is seen through love for the brethren.
B. If you have love for God, then there will be love for the brethren.

111. VERIFICATION THAT WE ARE THE CHILDREN OF GOD. Vs 2.

A. Love is not discriminatory.
B. We love as God loves us; unconditionally.
C. We keep His commandments. Vs 3
  a. Reasonable to keep them by presenting our bodies to Him Rom 12:1,2.

1V. THE CERTAINTY OF VICTORY. Vs 4.

A. Confirmed through the Word.
B. The Word is true. John 17:17.
C. Sanctification comes through the Word.

V. THE IDENTITY OF THE SAVED. Vs 5.

A. The believer recognized as one through love..
B. Love is… 1 Cor 13:4,5.
  a. Suffers long
  b. does not envy
  c. does not push itself
  d. is not proud
  e. Has the proper attitude
  f. is not selfish
  g. is not easily provoked.
  h. thinks good thoughts.

CONC: Identifying marks of the Christian begins with love for the brethren.
