TEXT: Luk 19:1 And Jesus entered and passed through Jericho.
Luk 19:2 And, behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich.
Luk 19:3 And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature.
Luk 19:4 And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycomore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way.
Luk 19:5 And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at thy house.
Luk 19:6 And he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully.
Luk 19:7 And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner.
Luk 19:8 And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold.
Luk 19:9 And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham.
Luk 19:10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.
SUB: SALVATION IS COME.
Intro: 1) Jesus had just healed a blind man.
2) Tell of the event now; excuses people make.
3) Those who sincerely desire a sight of Christ, like Zaccheus, will break through opposition, and take pains to see him
4) The purpose is to teach that the unsaved might be saved.
1.
JESUS CAME TO FIND THE LOST ZACCHEUS.
A. In God’s predetermination to save His elect, the Son came to do the Father’s Will:
Eph 1:4,5. According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,
John 6:38. For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.
B. There was a seeking to see the Lord by Zaccheus also; this point out man’s responsibility to seek the Lord. Isa 55:6 Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near.
11. ZACCHEUS’ CHARACTER HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH HIS SALVATION.
A.
What he had going against him.
1.
He was the chief among publican. Vs 2 In Judea, under the Roman system, all circumstances added up to make the publican the object of bitter hatred. He represented the hated power of Rome. The tax itself was looked upon as an inherent religious wrong, as well as civil imposition, and by many the payment of it was considered a sinful act of disloyalty to God. The tax-gatherer, generally a Jew, was a renegade in the eyes of his patriotic fellows. He paid a fixed sum for the taxes, and received for himself what he could over and above that amount
2.
He was rich. Vs 2. Jesus said…Mar 10:23 And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!
3.
He was small. Vs 3.
4.
He obviously was a dishonest person because of his later act.
B.
What he had going for him.
1.
He wanted to see Jesus.
2.
He was willing to make every human effort to see the Lord.
3.
He was a thinker.
C.
He, like everyone else needed forgiveness of sins.
111. JESUS INVITED HIMSELF TO ZACCHEUS’ HOME.
A.
It will seem to be the height of bad manners, but the Lord will do whatever is necessary to save His elect.
B.
There was urgency in the request of the Lord. “Make haste”. 2 Cor 6:2. (For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)
V. ZACCHEUS PROMPT OBEDIENCE RESULTED IN HIS SALVATION.
A.
He made haste upon the prompting of the Lord. Psa 110:3.
B.
He received Christ joyfully. Vs 6.
V1. THE SCOFFERS. Vs 7.
A.
The self-righteous.
B.
They failed to see that all were under the condemnation of the wrath of God.
V11. ZACCHEUS SALVATION CONFIRMED BY HIMSELF. Vs. 8.
A.
Till then Zaccheus had not exchanged any word with the Lord; he just obeyed.
Now he confirms his salvation by making restitution to those he had wronged. Exo 22:1 `When a man doth steal an ox or sheep, and hath slaughtered it or sold it, five of the herd he doth repay for the ox, and four of the flock for the sheep.
B.
Real salvation is seen in a person by their newness in Christ. 2 Cor 5:17
V111. ZACCHEUS’ SALVATION CONFIRMED BY JESUS. Vs 9.
A.
Today…now. E.g. the thief on the cross.
Today the Spirit confirms now. Rom 8:14. for as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are the sons of God;
1X. JESUS CONFIRMS THE PURPOSE FOR HIS CONDESCENSCION.
A.
To seek and to save the lost.
CONCL:
Salvation of one of God’s elect. Mar 13:27 And then shall he send his angels, and shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven.
1)
Christ is here to save, will you obey his invitation to you, will you receive Him joyfully and be saved for all eternity.
