SUB: ARE YOU HEAVEN BOUND?
TEXT: Joh 10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
Joh 10:28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
Joh 10:29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.
Joh 10:30 I and my Father are one.
Joh 10:31 Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him.
Intro: 1) Today, the subject of salvation from the mouths of many preachers has become a much perverted one.
2) As there are many denominations so there are different teachings on salvation by various men.
Rom 3:4 God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.
a.
The preachers are only God’s preachers when they unquestionably believe and proclaim all of God’s word.
b.
The standard of belief must be only the word of God. 11 Tim 3: 16. 17.
c.
Most of today’s preachers place more emphasis on books written by various fallible authors rather the Book inspired by the Infallible Holy Spirit of God.
d.
No wonder the standard of modern preaching keeps declining more and more because they keep seeking to elevate man and dethrone the Omnipotent God.
e.
Hence, the subject of salvation has become a very perverted one by men who attempt to make the Creator less than the creation.
3) The result is that many are deceived into thinking they might be saved because of a “works” religion.
1.
DOES GOD WANT EVERYONE TO BE SAVED? There is only one biblical answer to this. Emphatically no! Mar 4:9 And he said unto them, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
Mar 4:10 And when he was alone, they that were about him with the twelve asked of him the parable.
Mar 4:11 And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables:
Mar 4:12 That seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest at any time they should be converted, and their sins should be forgiven them.
A.
Jesus had just shared with all the people the parable of the sower and the seed.
a.
Wayside and the fowls of the air.
b.
Little soil so scorched easily.
c.
Thorns and thistles.
d.
Only a quarter had fallen on good ground and bore fruit. His meaning was not clear to any of them.
i.
He knew it would have had that effect. He that hath ears to hear let him hear.
ii.
Only to the 12 and a few who stuck with them did He explain the meaning.
e.
What was His reason for that? Mar 4:11 And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables:
Mar 4:12 That seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest at any time they should be converted, and their sins should be forgiven them.
f.
He does not want everyone to understand and be saved. Mat 13:10 And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables?
Mat 13:11 He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.
Mat 13:12 For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath.
Mat 13:13 Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.
Mat 13:14 And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive:
Mat 13:15 For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.
g.
How do you then explain 2Pe 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
i.
2Pe 1:1 Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ: Peter was writing this to Christians who were chosen by God unto salvation; the “us-wards”, not everyone.
ii.
What is the promise? Joh 6:37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.
iii.
There was a covenant between the Father, Son and Holy Spirit for the saving of souls.
a.
The Father sovereignly elected. Eph 1:4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:
Eph 1:5 Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,
b.
The Son ransomed them through His death on Calvary’s cross. Mat Mat 20:28 Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
c.
The Spirit gives spiritual life to. Joh 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.
h.
Emphatically, God does not want everyone to be saved.
11. IF SO, THEN WHO DOES GOD WANT TO BE SAVED? Only His sheep!
A.
Basically, there are only two types of people; saved and unsaved. The Lord classifies them as sheep and goats. Mat 25:32 And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats:
i.
The sheep bound for heaven.
Mat 25:33 And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.
Mat 25:34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:
ii.
The goats bound for hell. Mat 25:41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
iii.
Are you a goat or a sheep?
111. HOW DOES THE SHEEP BECOME BOUND FOR HEAVEN?
A.
Jesus says… Joh 10:28 And I give unto them eternal life.
i.
Jesus, the Incarnate God, gives salvation. Jonah 2:9. Heb 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
ii.
This gift is conferred upon the sheep through imputed righteousness. Rom 4:6 Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,
iii.
Rom 4:11 And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also:
B.
The certainty of receiving that salvation. Joh 10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
i.
Not only does the Shepherd know the sheep but the sheep know the Shepherd. They recognize His voice.
ii.
They follow Him.
C.
What of the goats?
i.
They too hear the word of God.
ii)
They do not believe; why? Joh 10:25 Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father's name, they bear witness of me.
Joh 10:26 But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you.
iii)
He confirms the fact that His sheep will believe and follow Him. Vs 27.
1V. HE GIVES HIS SHEEP LIFE BUT FOR HOW LONG? Joh 10:28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
Joh 10:29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.
A.
That life is called eternal life. “Eternal” 1. Existing through all time: lasting for all time without beginning or end.
B.
They shall never Perish. 1Pe 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
1Pe 1:4 To an inheritance incorruptible (aphthartos af'-thar-tos. undecaying (in essence or continuance): - not (in-, un-) corruptible, immortal.) , and undefiled (amiantos. Pure, without any blemish.) , and that fadeth not away (am-ar'-an-tos. perpetual) , reserved in heaven for you,
1Pe 1:5 Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
C.
No one, including you yourself, is able to pluck the sheep out of neither the Son’s hand nor the Father’s hand. They are One.
D.
Yes, when God (not the preacher, not you yourself nor the things you do or don’t do) saves you, you are eternally saved.
E.
The fact of this gives you peace and assurance of salvation. God expects you to have this. 1Jn 5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.
CONC. 1) Like any messenger of the truth, the Lord was despised and maligned. Joh 10:31 Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him.
2.
His own sought to stone Him. I have suffered at the hands of liars and not only I but the Lord’s church. Gal 6:7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
3) Jesus taught that …
a. He does not want everyone to be saved.
b. Only His sheep will be saved.
c. They will never lose that salvation.
APP. Are you a sheep? Have you been hearing His voice? Do you have assurance that He saved you once and for all? Do you know for sure that you are heaven bound?
If not, then know that He died to save sinners; will you trust Him and be heaven bound?
