Sermon by Samaroo Sookraj

SUB: O THAT WE WERE LIKE IN DAYS GONE BY!
TEXT: PSA 25: 1,2.

Intro:  1) The old way spoken of by many.
a.          The world keeps changing for the worse.
b.          The church is changing also. E.g. Vernon Mc Gee yesterday.
c.          Christians have changed also. Our worship especially.

2)          Here is a man who is worshipping. A cry directly from the heart; an attitude created by the presence of the blessed Holy Spirit of God, moving this one of Adam's race to cry out to the thrice Holy God.

3)          Something that today is lost within the assembly of the Lord as they congregate.

4)          Complacency, traditional rituals, a form of religious worship that appeals to neither real Christians nor even the world is practiced; a cheap substitute of the real thing.

5)          Could it be that many do not know what Biblical worship is?

1.          WORSHIP.

A.          It's meaning Webster defines it as  Chiefly and eminently,
i)          the act of paying divine honors to the Supreme Being; or
ii)          the reverence and homage paid to him in religious exercises, consisting in
a.          adoration,
b.           confession,
c.          prayer,
d.           Thanksgiving and the like.

B. The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia wur´ship (Anglo-Saxon: weorthscipe, wyrthscype, "honor," from weorth, wurth, "worthy," "honorable," and scipe, "ship"): Honor, reverence, homage, in thought, feeling, or act, paid to men, angels, or other "spiritual" beings, and figuratively to other entities, ideas, powers or qualities, but specifically and supremely to Deity.

C.          Easton Bible DictionaryHomage rendered to God which it is sinful (idolatry) to render to any created being.
One writer says... The Meaning of Worship

Worship that is accepted by God is a privilege unique to the Christian (1Pe_2:5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.). It is not a right. I am permitted to offer acceptable worship only by the grace of God. Therefore it is disheartening when children of God deliberately reject this privilege and wantonly absent themselves from the public assembly God has ordained for His glory and our good.  Consider briefly the significance of worship:

It is obedience to a divine command.
It is a means of nourishing the spirit.
It assists in achieving spiritual growth.
It encourages others in their spiritual development.
It shows the world where my priorities are.
It is one means of expressing my love for God.
It is an avenue God has provided by which I can praise His name.
It is the offering of spiritual sacrifices.
It is a way of showing my thanksgiving to God for all He has done for me.
It is a period of communion with God with the world shut out entirely.
It is an experience that should make the heart of every Christian glad!
Will you join your fellow Christians this Lord's day as they assemble to honor His name? Your Father will be looking for you.

Truly, Godly worship is missing from our churches and a cheap substitute is accepted. Just because we congregate together on Sunday mornings, this does not mean we are worshipping God.

11. THE ONE WORSHIPPING. Looking a little bit at the one worshipping here

A. A mortal man, David. A unique name Only he so named in the Bible beloved
1.          Shepherd   2.          Slinger   3.          Harpist   4.          Poet   5.     Psalmist
6.          Tribesman    7. Outlaw.   8.    King

B.          He was not always the David we keep hearing about. As a young man it is believed that he was involved in secular poetry and music. Amos 6:3-6 Ye that put far away the evil day, and cause the seat of violence to come near; That lie upon beds of ivory, and stretch themselves upon their couches, and eat the lambs out of the flock, and the calves out of the midst of the stall;  That chant to the sound of the viol, [and] invent to themselves instruments of musick, like David;  That drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief ointments: but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.

C.           In flight from Saul, he offered his army to the enemies of Israel.
From the International Standard Bible Encyclopedia David now, abandoning all hope of ever conciliating with the king (1Sa_27:1), made a move which shows at once his reckless daring and consummate genius. He offered the services of himself and his little army of 600 men to the enemies of his country.

D.          Like us, his human character brought out his many failings, yet His delight in God and his praises and adoration for and to God were always apparent.

E.          Unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.  Barnes in his commentary says of David here The state of mind is that of one who turns cheerfully away from earthly themes, and opens his mind to more lofty and hallowed influences.

F.          Gill says of this...  This denotes sincere, affectionate, hearty prayer to God, a drawing nigh to him with a true heart: for unless the heart is lifted up, the lifting up of the eyes or hands in prayer is of no avail; see Lam_3:41; Let us lift up our heart with [our] hands unto God in the heavens.

G.          David here presents his soul  as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which was his reasonable service; it is a deposit, which he committed into the hands of God, to be under his care and protection.

111. THE OBJECT OF HIS WORSHIP. Vs 1. Psa 25:1 Unto thee, O LORD, do I lift up my soul.

A.          The phrase is sometimes used to express earnest and vehement desire after anything; and may here intend the very great desire of the psalmist after communion with God; as is elsewhere by him expressed by panting after him, and by thirsting for him in a dry and thirsty land, Psa_42:1; As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.

B.          The desires of his soul were not to vain things, the vanities and idols of the Gentiles, but to God only, and to the remembrance of his name.

IV. HE HERE EXPRESSES HIS FAITH IN THE OBJECT OF HIS WORSHIP. O my God, I trust in thee:

A.          It is his personal God.
.
B.          This is the first thought - a feeling that he had true confidence in God, and that in all the duties of life, in all his trials, and in all his hopes for the future, his reliance was on God alone

C.          I depend upon thy infinite goodness and mercy for my support and salvation.

Conc. 1) this sermon is a testimony of the way God used this Psalm on Friday morning to bring me to a place of such adoration and worship to Him. I could not but help myself as the Holy Spirit led me in worship, the Hallelujahs just kept pouring out of my heart in the privacy of my bedroom.

2)          It only was possible because of the fact that He had saved chosen me, called me and saved me. I publicly declared my personal faith in Him through identification with His blood-bought institution on earth; His church.

App: 1) What of you this morning?  Has he saved you? Has your salvation resulted in your gloriously worshipping and adoring Him because He is your personal God and Savior?

2) Will you show your love for Him by identifying with His church through scriptural baptism?

We worship and adore Thee
Bowing down before Thee
Songs of praises singing
Hallelujahs ringing
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Amen.
