Sermon by Samaroo Sookraj Text: Gen 12: 1-5. Sub: Heeding God's command. Tell of the event here. Intro: 1) The problem of not heeding commands that are good for us. Sometimes we are told to make judgments, which to the human mind are illogical. 2) We do not see them as good sometimes because we don't see benefits in them. 3) As we advance in age we sometimes wish that we had obeyed then. This is the case of a man who, when commanded by God, unquestionably obeyed God. 1) God commanded Abram to leave. a. Abram was told by God that God will show him a land. b. God never commands without their being good reason to obey. c. We are commanded to believe the gospel, repent of our sins and be scripturally baptized. 2) God's command was obeyed by Abram. Heb 11:8: a. It was an authoritative command. b. It was obeyed because Abram acknowledged that he was under the authority of God. c. Our disobedience often stems from the fact that we refuse to be under God's authority. 3) Every promise that God made to Abram was eventually kept. vs 2-3. a. A change in life at 75 yrs of age. b. A change from security of relatives, income, prestige and power. c. He trusted God! d. It was not easy at first. vs. 10 4) Abram was afterwards called, Abraham: "father of a multitude". a. This was 24 years afterwards. Gen 17:1-9. b. He was also called "the friend of God" Isa 41: 8. James 2:23 c. He was called "the friend of God forever" 2 Chron 20:7 Conc. 1) God never commands us without there being good reason to obey. 2) Today, Abraham's name is a household name, a name revered by both the heathen and the redeemed. 3) He is with the Lord now. App: 1) Jesus, the incarnate God commands us to believe the gospel, which is His substitutionary death, His being buried and glorious resurrection. He also commands us to repent of our sins. Will you do so and trust Him as your Savior? 2) In recognition of His authority over us, will you be willing to be scripturally baptized? |
